ASCI's Proprietary Dimension Sandstones:
Dimension stone refers to high quality stone that meets certain ASTM standards and that can be cut,shaped and carved to specific dimenstions and profiles. All three of our proprietary stones meet the requirements to be classified as dimension stone.
Freestone is dimension stone with bedding so compact that it can be worked and carved in any direction. Our Historic Dorchester and Miramichi Sandstones are classified as freestones.
Historically, architectural building stones crafted from freestone are documented to have been used in constructions with a disregard for the direction of the bedding plane because it was deemed to not matter. Whether this be fact or fable is food for debate.
